MCC to Commemorate Constitution Day with Virtual Speaker

MCC will commemorate the 233rd anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution with an event hosted on Zoom

A leader of online learning for over 20 years, Middlesex Community College knows how to provide community and celebration for students even with 95 percent of all classes running online this Fall semester. At 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, Middlesex will commemorate the 233rd anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution with an event hosted on Zoom.

“Middlesex is proud to continue our tradition of commemorating Constitution Day,” said Kelly Bowes, MCC’s Coordinator of Civic & Service Learning. “The events of this year have led many of us to grapple with the ideals our nation was founded upon, our storied history as a country, and the future we strive to create for all its citizens.”

During the event, MCC will feature speaker LaTosha Brown, cofounder of Black Voters Matter Fund and a fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, among other titles. Brown will also offer a Q&A for students to discuss the future of democracy and organizing in the U.S.

Her biography emphasizes Brown is “an award-winning community organizer, philanthropic consultant, jazz singer and political strategist with over 20 years of experience working in the nonprofit and philanthropy sectors on a wide variety of issues related to social justice, economic development, leadership development, wealth creation and civil rights.”

Bowes hopes Brown’s talk will inspire MCC students to get involved in civic engagement and participation. She believes Brown’s experience will help students develop their political and social justice voices and understanding.

“LaTosha is a trusted voice on issues relating to civil rights, the political landscape and organizing groups to create change,” she said. “I'm so excited for students, faculty, staff and our community to hear her speak on the historical context that led us here, the current challenges we are facing and how each of us play a role in shaping our democracy for years to come.”
