MCC to Host Sports Cultural Historian Amy Bass
Author and radio host also worked for NBC Olympic Sports and won an Emmy Award for her work at 2012 London Olympics

As part of its Visiting Writers Series, Middlesex Community College will host author/historian Amy Bass, who is widely published on the cultural history of sports, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in the Federal Building Assembly Room, 33 Kearney Square, on the Lowell campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Bass is a professor of history at New York’s College of New Rochelle. In her latest book, “One Goal: A Coach, a Team and the Game That Brought a Divided Town Together,” she tells the true story of how Somali refugees and native-born kids in Lewiston, Maine, banded together to win the 2015 state soccer championship. Their accomplishments helped bridge racial and cultural divides.
Bass has published three previous books: “Those About Him Remained Silent: The Battle Over W.E.B. DuBois,” “In the Game: Race, Identity & Sports in the 20th Century,” and “Not the Triumph, But the Struggle: 1968 Olympics & the Making of the Black Athlete.” Her writing has appeared in Slate, Salon, CNN Opinion, and many other outlets.
