MCC Launches NEW Technical Theatre Certificate Program

New 18-credit certificate is designed to prepare students for employment in the technical side of performance and entertainment

This spring, Middlesex Community College is launching a new Technical Theatre Certificate Program. Registration is now open and spring-semester courses begin Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019.

This new 18-credit certificate is designed to prepare students for employment in the technical side of performance and entertainment, explained Karen Oster, Chairwoman of Performing Arts.

“The Massachusetts area is home to many theater and performing-arts venues that require employees trained in lighting, sound and stage design,” said Oster. “Other potential employers include cruise-ship lines with entertainment venues.”

“This certificate combines classes in music technology, computer-aided design, and electric circuitry, with courses in sound and lighting design, costume construction, and safety,” said Peter Waldron, Manager of the Academic Arts Center (AAC). Many Technical Theatre courses will be available in the AAC, MCC’s new state-of-the-art performing-arts facility on the Lowell campus.

“Students who complete this certificate can also continue their education by pursuing BA or BFA programs in technical theater at colleges such as Salem State University and UMass Amherst,” Oster added.
