MCC’s Biotech Learn & Earn Experience to Host Info Sessions

MCC's Biotech Learn and Earn Experience will host virtual info sessions 4:30 p.m.to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14 and Tuesday, November 10

Middlesex Community College offers credit and noncredit courses for students of all ages and at all stages of their lives. Many students go on to transfer to a four-year school, enter the workforce, or use the knowledge and skills they have learned to be more effective workers in their fields. MCC’s Biotech Learn and Earn Experience offers the potential to combine all three.

To provide more information for current and new students interested in MCC’s Biotech Learn and Earn Experience, the college is hosting two virtual information sessions. They will take place online 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14 and Tuesday, November 10.

As the first community college in Massachusetts to offer a biotechnology program in 1990, Middlesex has been preparing students to work in the industry for 30 years. In the spring, MCC was identified by the Strategic Grant Partners (SGP) as the recipient of an $841,000 grant intended to help the college scale up the already successful biotech program – the result of which is the Learn and Earn Experience.

“The Biotech Learn and Earn Experience is a wonderful opportunity for students to make a reliable income while gaining work experience in the growing field of biotechnology,” said Stefana Soitos, MCC’s Director of the Biotech Learn and Earn Experience. “The Experience opens the doors for a rewarding biotech career that easily fits into students’ academic plans.”

The Learn and Earn Experience allows qualified MCC biotech students to work at a company while completing an associate degree. Students work part- or full-time while taking classes that will fit into their work schedules to avoid conflicts. Within two years of starting the program, students will graduate with their degree and valuable work experience.

Additional benefits of the experience include support from a dedicated Learn and Earn team at MCC, guaranteed employment for one year – pending performance expectations – and potential permanent employment in the future, and fulfillment of the biotech internship requirement.

MCC students are hired as paid Manufacturing Technicians who are responsible for performing routine and critical manufacturing operations while maintaining Standard Operating Procedures. The participating employers for the 2020-2021 academic year are Abbvie and Takeda.
