MCC’s Community Education Helps Students Advance Careers

This Fall, Middlesex Community College’s professional development classes can help students jumpstart or advance in their careers. Run by the college’s Community Education and Training (CET) division, the variety of courses and certificates provide the knowledge and skills employees need to succeed in the workforce.

“MCC’s Community Education and Training division designs courses and certificates that help students gain marketable skills to get them hired in in-demand roles across Massachusetts,” said Audrey Nahabedian, MCC’s Dean of Workforce Development and Innovation. “Many programs feature hands-on and interactive learning opportunities taught by professionals who are experts in their field. Whether they’re looking for a new job or expanding their skillset, this ensures our students are well-prepared to be successful.”

Fall programs focus on subjects in computer applications, information technology (IT), generative artificial intelligence (AI), business, management, and personal enrichment. There is limited grant funding available for eligible students for some classes.

Students looking to update their computer application and IT skills can engage in a suite of classes to be prepared to start entry-level jobs in these fields. Fall options include Practical Computers, Business Computer Applications, Microsoft Excel, and Google IT Support Professional Certificate and the Google Cybersecurity Certificate.

Taught by Nate Bowen, the Google courses show students how to diagnose common computer problems, assist users, document issues, follow professional procedures, and communicate solutions to support both technical operations and customer service expectations. Preparing them to be more confident in the workforce, students are better able to transition from the classroom into real IT environments, according to Bowen.

“Technology changes every day, but the ability to learn, troubleshoot, and serve people well is what makes a strong IT professional,” Bowen said. “By combining certification-focused learning with real-world application, the program gives students the tools they need to pursue entry-level opportunities, continue their professional development, and build long-term careers in technology.”

In Generative AI, students discover how AI tools can enhance their professional and personal work. The course is taught by Peter Shea, MCC’s Assistant Dean for AI Integration, who also consults on a national level on AI in educational settings.

“Students will become acquainted with how AI works, what its common uses are, and how it can be used for both professional and personal objectives,” Shea said. “This course will help participants prepare for workforce changes involving AI.”

For students looking to grow into a management role, Middlesex courses highlight knowledge of key concepts that are adaptable to work in a wide range of industries. MCC’s Fall 2026 offerings include the award-winning SHRM Essentials of Human Resources class, as well as the Management Certificate and Training, Accounting/Bookkeeping Fundamentals, Grant Writing Certificate, and the Nonprofit Management Certificate taught by Kia Harris Tattegrain.

“The course is designed to cover the history and structure of nonprofits, finances, fundraising, board development, and programs and evaluation,” Tattegrain said. “Students are allowed to bring their experience – whether on the job, on a nonprofit board, or as a volunteer – to determine a resolution or a new way of thinking. The course is interactive and engaging, and we encourage diverse student from different parts of the nonprofit sector.”

Courses in Office Administration focus on dental and medical office administration, while a variety of personal enrichment classes teach new hobbies and skills. Fall options include floral design, cooking, cartoon and caricature drawing, and gentle chair yoga.
