Middlesex CC Continues to Expand on Career Development Offerings
MCC created the Office of Career Integrated Learning, naming Dr. Winny Oyamo-Twombly as Senior Director

A leader of workforce development, Middlesex Community College guides students on their paths from a degree or certificate to a career. To support these efforts, Middlesex created the Office of Career Integrated Learning, naming Dr. Winny Oyamo-Twombly as Senior Director.
“Integrated learning is an educational model that combines students learning in school and working in the field,” Oyamo-Twombly said. “While students are still in class, it creates the opportunity to infuse career development, practical skills and hands-on experiences throughout the students’ academic journey – as early as possible.”
The goal for MCC’s Office of Career Integrated Learning is to help students bridge the gap between their academics and career. Staff will work with faculty to make students aware of possible jobs, and the knowledge and skills they need to develop to become qualified candidates.

Upon graduating, Oyamo-Twombly wants students to leave MCC with a resume, cover letter, elevator pitch and experience in their field. With opportunities for Career Integrated Learning built into the curriculum for all programs, MCC is providing access to a safe space for students to explore their interests – without leaving them to find the resources and support on their own.
“When we infuse Career Integrated Learning into the curriculum, we are leveling the playing field for every single student who comes to Middlesex,” Oyamo-Twombly said. “MCC will provide a system that means the only thing a student has to do is say ‘yes’ in order to access the opportunities and support. Students develop career-related skills that will make them marketable in the field, and give them confidence to deploy their knowledge and skills in the job market.”

To form the Office of Career Integrated Learning, Middlesex merged the Biotechnology Learn and Earn Experience and Career Office. The goal is to incorporate the Learn and Earn model into additional programs, while building in varying integrated learning opportunities into other departments. Since its start in 2020, the Biotech Learn and Earn Experience has increased enrollment, retention and graduation numbers, according to Oyamo-Twombly.
“The students are getting paid and most are transitioning into full-time employment after their internship,” she said. “This model integrates with the curriculum to get students into the field early, but also creates an easy pipeline for companies. Students gain the professional skills and social capital they need to get into the industry.”
Oyamo-Twombly came to the U.S. as an International Student. Holding a doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Northeastern, she gained a passion for Career Integrated Learning when she struggled to find career opportunities on her own during her master’s program. She is in her eighth year at MCC and is excited to take on this new role.
“I am working with a team of people who believe in Middlesex, have a passion for student success, and are interested in doing whatever needs to be done to help students succeed,” she said. “Coming to Middlesex was the best professional decision I ever made.”
