Middlesex CC Returns to In-Person Student Art Show

MCC's Student Art Show will run until Wednesday, May 25

After two years online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Middlesex Community College’s Communication, Art & Design program is excited to return to an in-person Student Art Show. MCC’s Student Art Show kicked off on Friday, May 13 with a gala reception and award ceremony, and will run until Wednesday, May 25.

“We are thrilled to be back in person this year, and this will be the first student art show for our newly merged departments, featuring work from the Communication, Art, & Design majors,” said Dr. Jennifer Bauer, MCC’s Chair of Communication, Art & Design. “We have works from a variety of classes which include drawings, paintings, sculpture, pottery, mixed-media, graphic design, photography and film. The show really exemplifies the breadth and depth of our program, as well as the talent and hard work of our students.”

MCC student Liz Krin, who is from Cambodia, is pursuing a career in Graphic Design. She created a number of digital works for the Student Art Show, including a poster for MCC’s upcoming performance of “Rocky Horror Show.” She also is featuring three oil paintings.

“It is my first time participating in an art show, so my involvement was creating my digital artworks and fine arts pieces as well as putting it together on the foam board for the art show,” Krin said. “This is an opportunity for me to show my works and creativity to different audiences, which is also a great chance to build a network.”

A Liberal Arts student from Woburn, Kevin Burkett wanted to participate in MCC’s Student Art Show to highlight all that he has learned from his classes. In the future, he is looking to continue creating art as a graphic designer.

“MCC should be represented as a great school that has a lot of hard workers and great artists and students,” Burkett said. “I feel as though I am one of them and thought it'd be best to show what I have learned in the past two years.”

For MCC faculty member Angela Ales, the Student Art Show is an opportunity to celebrate the creativity of Middlesex’s talented students and art-related programs. She is excited to be able to do so in-person after “COVID has kept us away from so much.”

“I am thrilled that after such a long wait, we can now gather together and celebrate the artistic growth of our students,” Ales said. “Exhibitions are important not only to recognize the talent of our students, but to offer a creative challenge to our young artists, the ability to connect with family, friends, the MCC community, and in this case, with the Lowell artistic community. With awareness and caution we can come back together and celebrate our students’ accomplishments.”

Visitors can attend the Student Art Show at an exhibition space on 183 Dutton Street in Lowell, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays, 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, noon to 3 p.m. on Thursdays, 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
