Middlesex Community College Successfully Completes Title III Grant

Thanks to a five-year, $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Strengthening Institutions Title III Grant program, Middlesex Community College has improved student academic achievement, persistence, retention and engagement.

According to Associate Provost Clea Andreadis, Middlesex has met or exceeded all of the goals articulated in the Title III grant project titled, Strategies for Success: Increasing Achievement, Persistence, Retention and Engagement.

“MCC’s Strategies for Success work over the past few years has been extremely influential,” said Andreadis. “More than 11,000 students have benefitted from our reformed curriculum courses, and the college has seen a seven percent increase in retention.”

Grant funds were used to redesign approximately 50 gateway and developmental courses, and create more than 1,100 educational plans, according to Andreadis. New advising systems have been fully integrated into the student success culture, and advising materials have been redesigned for all programs of study. More than 50 part-time faculty have been trained in the Strategies for Success curriculum, as well as Degree Works and other academic advising systems.

Additionally, MCC was able to add three full-time positions, and a number of technology tools designed to promote student success. The grant has also informed the ongoing work of the mathematics Ramp-Up initiative for developmental students, as well as the state Department of Higher Education’s Vision Project.
