New Deolinda Mello Memorial Scholarship to Assist MCC Students

This annual $500 scholarship will target Lowell residents who are immigrants and/or children of immigrants studying at MCC

A new Deolinda Mello Memorial Scholarship has been established to support students at Middlesex Community College.

The annual $500 scholarship will target Lowell residents who are immigrants and/or children of immigrants, who are pursuing higher education at Middlesex, and who wish to dedicate their lives to helping others.

“It’s wonderful to see members of our community step forward and provide resources that help other members of our community achieve their educational goals,” said MCC President James C. Mabry. “Middlesex applauds the generosity of the friends and family of Deolinda Mello and is looking forward to working with recipients of this new scholarship established in her memory.”

A lifelong resident of Lowell, Mello was a child of immigrants. This upbringing imbued her with strong beliefs that each immigrant and refugee brings talents, skills and culture that enrich the community. She dedicated her life to caring for and helping everyone – regardless of their race, color, creed or nationality – and this passion became her career.

To celebrate Mello’s legacy, this new scholarship has been created by members of the Portuguese-American community in Lowell. It will be awarded annually by Middlesex and is being administered by the Greater Lowell Community Foundation (GLCF).

Linnehan Jr., GLCF President/CEO. “This scholarship will have a great impact assisting students in pursuit of higher education. Education is the great equalizer – it can never be taken away and makes a big difference in life.”
