Proposal Would Allow Dorms at Community Colleges

There is no need for housing at Middlesex Community College, said a college official.

Though state higher-education officials plan to vote on whether to allow dorms at the state’s community colleges, a Middlesex Community College said there isn’t a need for dorms at either its Bedford or Lowell campuses.

Patrick Cook, executive director of public affairs at Middlesex Community College, told State House News Service, "We don't hear students clamoring for dormitories... We're not opposed to the idea of dorms, but it just hasn't been raised as significant. There hasn't been a big outcry for them."

Most MCC students work full-time already and have families. In fact, the median age is 26 so there isn't a real need for student housing, said Cook.
