Start a New Career with MCC’s Community Education Courses

This Fall, MCC's Community Education and Training (CET) is offering online courses and certificates to help jumpstart and advance careers

Middlesex Community College helps students get the jobs they want. This Fall, MCC’s Community Education and Training (CET) is offering online courses and certificates to help jumpstart and advance careers. At Middlesex, students gain the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective employee as an adult learner returning to school, laid-off worker seeking a new profession, or furloughed employee looking for professional development.

Offering more online course options means students do not have to put their education or future plans on hold, according to Sheila Morin, MCC’s Director of CET. MCC’s CET remains committed to providing high-quality and immersive classes taught by industry professionals.

“MCC has always been at the forefront of career training,” she said. “Learning and continuing education is a lifelong process, even if you completely love your job or already have a four-year degree. Now is the perfect time to assess your employability.”

MCC’s CET management courses develop and hone leadership skills that make an employee more comfortable and confident in their work. The Essentials of HR Management course benefits those who are looking to start a career in HR or for managers and business owners wanting to improve employee relations.

In the Management and Leadership certificate, students learn team building, critical thinking and effective decision-making skills, as well as how to demonstrate a high performance work-style and put group ideas into action. Some courses offer timely guidance, such as Effective Performance Management Done Remotely and Leading Effectively During Turbulent Times.

The Nonprofit Management Certificate offers an overview of the nonprofit business world. Classes cover how to manage finances, boards, program development and evaluation, fundraising, building support and strategic planning from a nonprofit perspective.

MCC’s CET also offers courses focused on building skills companies need in specific roles, such as in Accounting and Bookkeeping Fundamentals. Students are prepared to enter the workforce by learning to better understand accounts, debits and credits, analyzing transactions, journaling, general ledger, closing and adjusting entries, post-closing trial balance and financial reporting.

Crisis Communications is another course relevant to the times that prepares employees to evaluate and respond to a crisis that negatively impacts the image and reputation of a business or organization. Students can take an individual class or earn a certificate to learn how to plan for the unexpected and to handle crises internally and externally if and when they arise.

CET also offers training in medical fields. Pharmacy Technicians can work in hospitals, pharmacies and a variety of other healthcare settings. In MCC’s course, students learn operations, laws, calculations and medical abbreviations, dosage forms and regulations. The course includes an externship for students to gain practical experience in a local pharmacy. Students are also prepared to take the certification exam.

MCC’s Vascular Technology course is self-instructional. Students gain knowledge about how to perform vascular sonography and prepare to take the certification exam. Students can study at their own pace while having designated times to speak with instructors about the content.

In the Medical Interpreting program, students who are bilingual have the opportunity to learn how to break into this field and prepare for the national certification exam. Students learn the standards of practice, ethics, HIPAA regulations, cultural competency and medical terminology.

Healthcare professionals, frontline staff and students who are interested in helping patients who have Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia can complete the certification program. Topics include the fundamentals of care and how to enhance patients’ quality of life, foster sensitivity and respect, teach communication skills and provide a sensitive approach to assisting patients.
