GLOUCESTER, MA — More than 4,000 spectators gathered at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester on June 20 and 21 for a weekend of reenactments, historical interpretations and commemorative events honoring the Battle of Gloucester, which took place 251 years ago.

More than 200 reenactors and living historians from across the country took part in the two-day event, featuring a maritime battle, a land battle, a period-authentic military-style encampment and interactive learning stations focused on life in 18th-century New England.

Local schooners portrayed the ships involved in the battle as spectators watched the British HMS Falcon sail into Gloucester Harbor, capture one Gloucester schooner and run another ship aground. The militia then fired at the boats from shore, demonstrating the resolve of Gloucester's militia and townspeople.

Later in the day, the action moved to land. Stage Fort Park was transformed into a colonial representation of the town, complete with facade houses, a church, boats and rail fences.

In between battles, attendees heard from civilians and soldiers about daily life during the American Revolution. Visitors also explored more than a dozen interactive learning stations organized by the Ladies Association of Revolutionary America, which demonstrated aspects of colonial life, including spinning wheels and tape looms, clothing and food.

"What a great opportunity for the people of New England to come and see the history of the American Revolution in all its complexity, as it was 250 years ago," said Jonathan Lane, Executive Director of Revolution 250 and member of the Battle of Gloucester Committee. "We truly appreciate the thousands who came out and the hundreds of volunteers who made this wonderful event possible."

"Recreating the maritime portion of the Battle of Gloucester took the collective work of several organizations, volunteers, committed captains, crews and rowers," said Michael De Koster, Battle of Gloucester Committee Cultural Heritage & Maritime Coordinator. "Having the opportunity to portray this maritime heritage event in this historic harbor during America's 250th celebration year added both local and national significance to our efforts. We are grateful to America's oldest seaport for letting us portray our story."

The events were organized by the Lexington Minute Men, His Majesty's 10th Regiment of Foot, Revolution 250, Essex National Heritage Area, Ringo Tarr Productions, Emily Tarr, LARA and Colonel Bailey's 2nd Massachusetts Regiment, with support from Gloucester Police, Fire, and the Department of Public Works.
