Goose Rescued After Week Tangled In Fishing Line On North Shore College Campus

BEVERLY MA — A Canadian goose that had been tangled in fishing line with a hook in its neck near Endicott Lake for the past week was safely captured and taken for further treatment.

Endicott College campus officers, dispatchers and command staff had spent a week trying to capture the goose and connect with rehabilitation and wildlife services that could help. The bird had been seen around Endicott Lake with fishing line attached, and responders continued trying to reach it even after multiple attempts by rehabilitation organizations were unsuccessful.

Endicott public safety said the goose appeared generally healthy and well-fed during that time. But each time rescuers got close, the bird often retreated to the lake, where it was able to swim away quickly.

Responders continued those efforts because the goose might need additional intervention to live a healthy life.

The rescue happened late Friday morning with help from animal control officers from two local police agencies. The goose was captured safely, the tangled fishing line was removed, and a hook was dislodged from its neck.

After a brief assessment, the animal control officers determined the goose needed further medical attention.

The bird was then transported to a rehabilitation facility that could provide the necessary care.
