MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA, MA — One person was dead, one was missing and a third was injured when the U.S. Coast Guard announced late Sunday that it was suspending its search following the discovery Saturday of a distressed boat occupied by only a dog near Manchester-by-the-Sea.
The agency was notified around 4:30 p.m. Saturday of a recreational vessel going in slow circles south of Graves Beach with no one visible aboard. A Coast Guard crew located the runaway boat and found a dog on board, who was reunited with its family, according to the agency.
A search began for three people previously aboard, the agency said.
Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea harbormasters each recovered a person from the water, with one flown to Massachusetts General Hospital and the other, who was dead on arrival, taken to Beverly Hospital, according to the Coast Guard.
The search for a missing 37-year-old continued into Sunday before it was suspended, according to the agency.
"The decision to suspend a search is never made lightly," Capt. Jamie Frederick said in a news release. "Our deepest condolences are with the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy. We are grateful to our local, state, and federal partners who supported the search efforts."
