APH requires one year of Latin for all first-year students. Students may study French, Spanish, or Latin to meet their language requirement of three consecutive years of study of world languages, although four is strongly encouraged. APH also offers Introductory Russian, and beginning Fall 2019, we also added Mandarin in cooperation with Gordon College.

The National Latin Exam (NLE) is sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. It is a 40-question, multiple-choice test with a time limit of 40 minutes. There are questions on Latin grammar, mythology, derivatives, literature, Roman life, history, geography, oral Latin, and reading comprehension. Approximately 130,000 students took the test this year. Massachusetts is typically at or near the top of all states in the number of students participating.

The NLE was created over 30 years ago to promote the study of Latin and to encourage the individual student in their study of Latin. It is administered annually through the College of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia in all fifty states and in over a dozen countries.
