Essex Man Charged In Beverly Hit-And-Run On Rantoul Street

Police said the woman was struck by two different vehicles while walking near 375 Rantoul Street at about 10 p.m. on Sunday.

BEVERLY, MA — An Essex man was charged with negligent driving and leaving the scene of an accident after Beverly police said he was identified as one of the two drivers who hit a woman on Rantoul Street on Sunday night.

Police said the pedestrian was struck twice at about 10:15 p.m. Witnesses told police she was first struck by a vehicle traveling southbound and that the driver stayed on the scene and was cooperating with police. She was then hit by a second vehicle traveling northbound and police said witnesses told them that driver stopped "for a matter of seconds before fleeing the scene."

Essex police stopped a vehicle matching the description given by Beverly police and the driver was identified as Diego Mattos-Vazuldo, 47, of Essex.

Mattos-Vazuldo was taken back to Beverly where he was charged. He was to be arraigned in Salem District Court on Monday.

The victim was taken to Beverly Hospital before being transported to Brigham & Woman's Hospital via Medflight with serious injuries
