Beverly Officials Publicly Condemn U.S. Capitol Attack

BEVERLY, MA — Beverly Mayor Mike Cahill, the City Council and the School Committee issued a joint statement Tuesday night publicly condemning the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

"We, community leaders of Beverly, Massachusetts, join our voices together to condemn in the strongest way possible the violent attempt to derail our country's Constitutional peaceful transfer of power that all Americans witnessed unfold at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.

"We stand together to disavow acts of violence, hate, and harm, just as we stand together in affirming our strong and shared belief in the processes of democracy and in our free and fair elections.

"We remain committed to our important work together for the greater good of all the people of Beverly."

Five people — including a Capitol police officer — were killed on Jan. 6 when a mob overran police guarding the U.S. Capitol and breached the building as legislators were officially confirming the election of Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States.

Last week, former President Donald Trump was impeached for the second time under a single article of impeachment for "high crimes and misdemeanors" for inciting the riot. He is set to stand trial in the U.S. Senate.

Biden was inaugurated as president Wednesday at noon.
