Beverly Seniors Fret Over Cost Of Living

By 2030, senior citizens are projected to make up 28% of Beverly's population.

BEVERLY, MA -- Three-quarters of senior citizens in Beverly want to stay in the city, but more than one-in-two worry about the high cost of living, according to a student released by the Beverly Council on Aging. Other top reasons why people may not be able to stay in Beverly in their later years, according to the needs assessment, are not having nearby family and the high cost of housing.

Seniors are projected to make up 28% of Beverly's population by 2030. Their numbers have been steadily growing, from 7,600 to 9,100 in the most recent census data. About 62% of the respondents to the survey said its important to them to remain in the city as they grow older.

The needs assessment was based on a survey of 800 people over the age of 65 living in Beverly. The report also addressed the utilization of resources available to elders in Beverly.
