Beverly Theater Apologizes After Visiting 'Jaws' Actor Offends Fans

BEVERLY, MA — The Cabot Theater in Beverly issued an apology over the weekend after visiting "Jaws" actor Richard Dreyfuss made "offensive" comments during a question and answer session at a special screening, according to multiple reports.

Dreyfuss, 76, appeared at the venue Saturday night for a "An Evening with Richard Dreyfuss + Jaws Screening" event to relive memories of his breakout role as Hooper in the iconic 1975 film.

But the energy in the room took a turn when he made sexist and transphobic comments, according to accounts from people who were in attendance.

According to an account by one guest that was posted to Facebook, Dreyfuss "was talking about Audrey Hepburn and Barbra Streisand and the misogyny in Hollywood and he proceeded to say that he also didn't believe that 10-year-olds were able to choose their own gender because they were too young and people started booing him and walked out so he didn't get to finish his statement."

The theater later said in a statement that they "deeply regret that Mr. Dreyfuss's comments during the event were not in line with the values of inclusivity we uphold at The Cabot," adding that they "sincerely apologize" to the community members who found his remarks "distressing and offensive," Boston25 reported.

The statement continued: "We take full responsibility for the oversight in not anticipating the direction of the conversation and for any discomfort caused."
