Beverly Train Crash Into Car Closes Hale Street, Stops Commuter Rail

UPDATE: A driver was injured and Hale Street was closed in both directions following the collision at about 4 p.m.

BEVERLY, MA — A collision between a train and a vehicle closed Hale Street and halted MBTA Commuter Rail service around the time of the evening commute on Wednesday.

Media reports said the driver of the car — a red sedan — was hospitalized with injuries while the crash created hours of "significant" rail delays.

Beverly police said Hale Street would be closed "until further notice" inbound from the intersection of Hale and Haskell Street, and outbound from the intersection of Hale and Thissell Streets at about 4:15 p.m.

Hale Street was reopened late in the afternoon, while Thissell Street between Common Lane and Hale Street remained closed.

The MBTA said trains were stopped for more than an hour with significant ensuing delays.

As of 6 p.m., the Rockport train was about 35 to 40 minutes behind schedule for stops between Salem and North Station.
