This case study posted in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation features a 17-month-old child with a presentation of foot pain following a jumping injury. The child’s mother brought her son to four doctors in an attempt to find relief for her hurting boy. [Alcantara J, Kleijan M. This is where the runaround begins. The mother was told by the ER that the boy must have “done something to the foot and just needs to rest it.”
Unsatisfied, she brought the boy to see a pediatrician who diagnosed the child with a knee strain and told her to “wrap the knee and let it rest.” The mother reported that the boy was “crawling everywhere” and quickly came to find that he couldn’t have a knee strain and crawl on it.

Finally, she brought the boy to see a chiropractor who performed a full examination and quickly found a sacroiliac joint subluxation on the same side as the “foot” pain.
At this point, the mother wanted to make sure the boy was on the right track. She took him to see an orthopedic specialist who confirmed the chiropractor’s diagnosis. However, his recommendation was similar to the other M.D.’s. Just ”rest it.”
Rest and Heal vs. Correct and Heal WELL?
The chiropractor was the only doctor to find the cause of the foot pain and offer a protocol for correcting it. YES, the boy was adjusted and was quickly running again as if nothing ever happened. TAKE NOTE, the “foot pain” was originating in the spine and not the foot!
I don’t doubt that this child’s “foot pain” would have healed and felt well again given enough time. However, the recommendation of “let it rest” would have surely left this child with future complications and is JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Healing well and staying healthy takes a specific diagnosis and accurate correction. This is what good chiropractic care provides.
