Cape Ann Artist Katalene (Kat) Masella Named 2026 Distinguished Artist/Teacher for Goetemann Artist

Gloucester, MA — Cape Ann artist Katalene (Kat) Masella has been named the 2026 Distinguished Artist/Teacher for the Goetemann Artist Residency at Rocky Neck Art Colony, an invitation-only honor awarded through committee selection. Recognized for her large-scale oil and mixed-media paintings, Masella creates richly layered works that merge abstraction, figurative elements, and art historical references into powerful explorations of connection, memory, and the human experience.

Masella's current body of work reveals how ordinary moments can inspire transformation through expressive mark-making, dynamic compositions, and luminous color. Her paintings have been described by Forbes Magazine (April 2024) as having "an overarching theme of connectedness," reflecting a practice that balances formal innovation with emotional depth.

As the 2026 Distinguished Artist/Teacher, Masella will engage the public through an exhibition, artist talk, and hands-on workshop designed to offer insight into both her creative process and teaching philosophy.

Her solo exhibition, Seeking Sanity, will be on view at Gallery RAG, 37 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester, from August 1–9, 2026. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, August 6, from 5:00–7:00 p.m.

Masella will present an Artist Talk at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center on Saturday August 8, from 4:30–5:30 p.m., discussing the ideas, influences, and intuitive process behind her work.

The residency concludes with a four-day immersive workshop, presented in partnership with Montserrat College of Art, from August 10–13, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. each day. Participants will explore Masella's highly physical and intuitive approach to painting while developing their own creative voice.

"Working spontaneously allows me to respond quickly in the moment, trusting the wisdom I've gleaned," says Masella. "I pour my heart and spirit into the work, focusing on the bigger picture and the deeper meanings of life."

A lifelong student of painting, Masella earned a Certificate in Painting from the Art Students League of New York and a Graduate Certificate in Visual Arts from Harvard University. She is currently completing a master's degree through Falmouth University's College of Art in the United Kingdom.

Among Masella's most influential mentors was New York artist Frank O'Cain, a protégé of Vaclav Vytlacil, whose teaching lineage includes artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Willem de Kooning, and Cy Twombly. That mentorship encouraged Masella to develop the bold, expressive visual language that distinguishes her work today.

Her paintings combine the physical energy of Expressionism, the vibrant palette of Fauvism, and subtle references to the Dutch vanitas tradition, creating layered compositions that reward sustained viewing. Whether working in oil or mixed media, Masella invites viewers into an intimate yet expansive dialogue about resilience, beauty, impermanence, and shared human experience.

Masella's work has been exhibited nationally and is held in private collections throughout the United States and internationally. Her paintings are also included in the corporate collections of Honeywell International and Bang & Olufsen.
