Opening reception: Thursday, August 27 from 5 to 8pm
Gloucester, MA — The act of assembly reveals, to the artist, new forms, new relationships of color and shape. Perhaps another unit can be placed over here, or a new piece added there, giving a fresh and unexpected whole. These works by five Rocky Neck members explore assemblage, in its broadest sense. Using materials ranging from wire, corrugated cardboard, reclaimed wood and hardware, to toy figures, rocks, and recycled flameworked glass the pieces become, in the hands of the contributing artists, surprising and delightful 3-D works.
The artists in this show include:
David Covert has been involved in art making for nearly fifty years. Basically self-taught, by virtue of continuing to draw, paint, and occasionally sculpt since the late sixties. Much of his work has been in the two-dimensional arts, dominated by drawing and painting and printmaking. His training has been mostly informal, interspersed with individual classes at Boston area art schools including the Museum School of the MFA, Mass College of Art, and the late DeCordova Museum school. Brian Murphy graduated from Rhode Island School of Design, then off to NYC honing agency skills. He settled in Beverly, Massachusetts, where he continues to work with ad agencies and individual clients. In between he still finds time to create original artwork made from scrap materials. Marion Powers is a mixed media artist and a painter who lives and works in Manchester-by-the-Sea. Her assemblages incorporate objects collected during her travels. Her work begins with a found frame. She composes intuitively using an evolving collection of jewelry, watch parts, hardware, book covers and other objects that she has collected over time. Some pieces have personal history, while others are chosen for their beauty or character or the story they suggest. She transforms these elements into compositions I call "jewels". What was once discarded or put aside becomes precious. She creates these works to encourage others to look for beauty in the ordinary and overlooked objects and to recognize the potential in everyday objects and to, hopefully, inspire curiosity, reflection and a deeper appreciation for the unexpected. Marion earned her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her work is held in private collections in New York City, Cape Ann and beyond.
Judy Robinson-Cox creates miniature shadowboxes, collages and small assembled sculptures using a variety of found objects and tiny plastic people. She creates these light-hearted artworks to make people smile and appreciate the world in which we live. She attended NYU School of Fine Arts and earned a BFA from the University of Connecticut with additional classes at Montserrat College of Art. Beth Williams explores the qualities of glass and color. Using light and transparency in surprising ways along with layering color on color helps her to create unusual contemporary beads, jewelry and small sculptures. She gleans inspiration from her gardens, the ever-changing light on the ocean, the seascapes that surround her ... anywhere colors collide in nature. Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, nurtures excellence in the arts through exhibitions, workshops, residencies and vibrant cultural events for its members and the public. An internationally acclaimed dynamic singer, songwriter and guitarist, Jeff&nbsp;achieved national recognition when his album&nbsp;Heavy Hitter (Pyramid Records/EMI)&nbsp;reached #7 on the Billboard Charts, outselling Delbert McClinton, Robert Cray, Etta James, Johnny Lee Hooker &amp; Muddy Waters. Jeff has recorded with such greats as J Geils, Rick Derringer, Dave Mason, James Cotton and Clarence Clemons. He received international recognition when he toured Europe, even playing with the Commitments as a special guest.&nbsp;
He won the "Best Guitarist" in the State of Connecticut at age 15. He has won numerous awards since, including two songwriting awards from the Great American Songwriting Contest. The International Songwriting Contest (ISC) judge and renowned blues legend&nbsp;John Mayall&nbsp;subsequently recorded Pitchell's song "An Eye for an Eye" on one of his albums. Pitchell and his band, Texas Flood, won the BEST BLUES ACT in New England in a six-state vote.

Since starting his musical career in 1967 by founding and fronting Roomful of Blues, Duke Robillard has been at the forefront of Blues, Swing and classic R&amp;B/Jump blues for over 45 years earning him his legendary status while influencing and inspiring countless legions of musicians and fans worldwide.
He has been nominated for 2 Grammy Awards for traditional blues album of the year in 2007/2010 and named Blues Music Awards Traditional male Blues Artist of the Year in 2010.
He has won the Blues Music Award for guitarist of the year 5 times, being the second most honored for that award and has garnered no less than 21 BMA nominations in various categories since 1989.
He was honored with a Blues Foundation “Keeping the Blues Alive” award for producer of the year in 2004. Besides winning numerous international awards from France and Canada, Duke received the prestigious Rhode Island Pell Award for “Excellence in the Arts” in 2007.
Leading his own group Duke has toured non-stop for the past 30 some years recording more than 20 critically acclaimed CDs under his own name. He has toured as guitarist with Tom Waits and the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Recorded with the likes of Bob Dylan, Ruth Brown, Jay McShann, Pinetop Perkins, Kim Wilson, Jimmy Witherspoon , Rosco Gordon, Maria Muldaur and many, more.
Duke and his band were nominated for band of the year in 2010.
Duke was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame in May of 2014.

Deric Dyer was born in Ireland and lived in England until 1967, when his trumpet-player father moved his family to Bermuda – where Deric’s musical career began. In Spring of 1975, after meeting Cliff Goodwin and joining the American Standard Band, Deric moved to America. Just two years later, ASB would become Joe Cocker‘s band. Playing in Joe’s horn section with the legendary Bobby Keys, “Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder” Deric quickly learned the art of Rock/R&amp;B sax. This proved to be valuable experience for what was still to come in his career. After a couple of years of playing with Joe, Deric left to play and record with many of the best of Boston’s music scene, a highlight recording with Rick Ocasek of The Cars on his first solo album Beatitude.
Deric’s next life-changing opportunity came in January 1987, when he had the good fortune to audition for Rock And Roll Hall of Fame -Tina Turner. He spent an amazing two years as part of her Break Every Rule World Tour, and when Tina was paired with Joe Cocker on Summer festival shows in Germany, Deric and Joe rekindled their friendship. Deric wasn’t home long from TT tour when manager Michael Lang (Woodstock Promoter) called to ask if he would like to re-join Joe Cocker and the rest of the band for the Unchain My Heart World Tour. Deric jumped at the chance to revisit that special time in his career.
Deric continued to tour with Joe throughout the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s, as well as playing with Roger Hodgson, Al Jarreau, Tony Hadley and Andrea Bocelli. Belgium’s Night of The Proms reunited him with his Tina band mate (and the best man at his wedding), John Miles. In 2012 and 2013, Deric was asked to take part in the John Lennon Double Fantasy Bermuda Tribute Concerts, where he worked with Maxi Priest, Biggie Irie, Roy Young, Uzimon and many amazing Bermudian artists to celebrate the music of John Lennon.
Two years after losing Joe, arguably the greatest voice in Rock &amp; Roll, Deric reached out to his old friends to ask if they could come together again to help keep Joe’s music alive. Their answer was a resounding “YES!” and “Mad Dogs Unchained” was born. MDU went on to play Worcester’s Bull Mansion (among other New England venues), release an hour-long documentary video with a live CD, and travel Europe for eighteen shows in 2018.
During the pandemic, Deric also collaborated with James Duncan and Tony Brannon to produce “Hope!” - a song for the time - with the goal of helping lift the spirits of people everywhere.
Deric Produced the Trilbee Kings album. Working with Executive Producer Rich Kneeland, Deric &amp; Rich, with some of the best musicians in the world, headed of to Los Angeles to record at the famous Sunset Sound Studios. Deric plays soaring solos that adds the final, rich sound to the T.K. Album.
On July 4th 2023 Deric performed in celebration of Tina Turner at New York City’s Macy’s/NBC fireworks display, seen live by millions all over the world. Later that year was a special guest speaker at the Tina Turner Museum - West Delta Heritage Center Brownsville TN. Deric also rereleased Renaissance Man with the additional track “Tennessee Waltz” Sept 2023.
This September brings the release of Deric’s sixth album Red String. A beautiful mix of classic songs from Dylan “Make You Feel My Love” Lennon “Imagine” to Jim Webb “Wichita Lineman” Another captivating musical journey!
