Cummings Properties seeks proposals from New England-based artists

Elliott Landing luxury condominiums to feature new sculpture

Cummings Properties has issued a request for proposals from New England-based artists to create “a new distinctive public art sculpture” for the grounds of the Elliott Landing luxury condominiums, currently under construction. Expected to be installed by June 2017, the artwork will be located at the highly visible corner of Elliott and McKay Streets.

Although Cummings Center features three decorative fountains, this sculpture is the first artwork per se ever commissioned by Cummings Properties, according to Steve Drohosky, vice president and general manager of Cummings Center.

“To make Cummings Center an attractive and interesting destination for clients and visitors, we’ve put a lot of effort into landscaping, and we display many historic artifacts from the United Shoe Machinery Corporation’s industrial legacy” said Drohosky. “We’re excited to add a new element to the campus – something contemporary that acts as a gateway and speaks to the site’s long history of innovation.”

The Cummings Center property is reportedly the oldest continuously used commercial business site in the United States. A tidal grist mill operated there from 1642 until the 1890s. Other interests then used the docks for about 10 years until United Shoe took over in 1903. Finally, Cummings Properties purchased the site in 1996.

Cummings Properties has solicited the assistance of Monserrat College of Art to process proposals for the sculpture, perform initial evaluations, and make recommendations.

“We’re fortunate to have such a well-respected art institution right here in Beverly, and we’re delighted with Monserrat’s involvement in this project” said Drohosky.

Submissions are due August 5, and the chosen artist is expected to be announced September 15. More information about the project and instructions for submitting a proposal are available here. Questions, however, should be directed to Leonie Bradbury, director and curator of Montserrat College of Art Galleries, at leonie.bradbury@montserrat.edu.

Elliott Landing is anticipated to be ready for occupancy in November 2016, according to Drohosky, who noted that one-third of its 73 homes have been pre-sold.
