Beverly recently had one of the most exciting elections in recent memory. It had been nearly a generation since there was an open seat for Mayor, there was also an open At-Large City Councilor seat, two open Ward Councilor seats and two highly competitive races in Ward Six for Councilor and School Committee.
The common rule is the more competitive races, the higher the turn out. Nice weather also typically builds voter turn out. Beverly's 2013 Municipal elections decided to break both rules.
City-wide, only 40.95% of voters made it out to cast a ballot. In 2011's Municipal elections, Beverly saw a 43.92% turn out.
What can be done to increase voter turnout in Beverly's next local election?
