BEVERLY – Montserrat College of Art welcomed freshmen and transfer students to campus on Saturday, with returning students moving in over the weekend through the beginning of the week as the first day of classes nears on Wednesday. (Aug. 30)
The college has seen a level enrollment since last year and will expect about 370 students, more than 75% of whom live on and near campus. The student population this year is 69% female. Sixty-eight percent of the new students are from New England, with 44% of those coming from Massachusetts. Other states the new students are from include California, Washington DC, Deleware, Florida, Maryland, Virginia, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.
Montserrat’s housing is apartment-style so students are well integrated into the community to shop, study, work and live, and last year the college reported an economic impact to the Greater Beverly area of more than $25 million.

The semester kicks off publicly with a free, accessible gallery opening at 23 Essex St., the Hardie Building, on Sept. 6 from 5-8 pm for the exhibition of “Figure/Ground.” The public is welcome to attend.
