North Shore CDC to Create 46 New Units of Affordable Housing

North Shore Community Development Coalition has announced that its proposal to build 46 new homes has been approved by the city of Salem.

North Shore Community Development Coalition (CDC) announced Thursday that its proposal to build 46 new homes in Salem received final permitting approvals from the City of Salem. The new project, called The Lighthouses, includes two new buildings in Salem’s Point neighborhood that will be 100% affordable.

An artistic, iconic 21-unit building with 19 parking spaces will be constructed at 34 Peabody Street on a parking lot currently owned by North Shore CDC. The site is a part of the growing, innovative district around the South River, following the city’s investment in Peabody Street Park in 2007, the Harborwalk in 2008, and a new park at 289 Derby Street last year, as well as significant private investment in new businesses along the north side of the river. It is also in the heart of North Shore CDC’s newly-launched Punto Urban Art Museum, an open air museum of street art. The new building will feature a semi-public, art-filled walkway connecting Ward & Peabody Streets, a community room facing Peabody Street Park and a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments.

The second building is at the corner of Leavitt & Congress Street, directly across from Palmer Cove Park. It will house 25 studio and two bedroom apartments, 23 parking spaces and 1500 square feet of retail facing Congress Street.

Both buildings will be built using the Passive Hause standards, an internationally-recognized green building standard that is amongst the most challenging for developers to achieve. They will be the first buildings of their kind to be built on the North Shore. The architect on the project is ICON Architecture.

“We are proud to invest in the Point and excited to be using innovative, sustainable, exciting design to our portfolio. These buildings will be beautiful new gateways to the Point and will provide safe, quality, affordable homes to families for generations to come,” said Mickey Northcutt, CEO of North Shore CDC.
