North Shore Search For Missing 70-Year-Old Beverly Woman Ends

The search for a Beverly woman whose abandoned vehicle was found in Newburyport ended with the recovery of a body in the Merrimack River.

NEWBURYPORT, MA — The search for a 70-year-old Beverly woman whose vehicle was found abandoned on the side of a North Shore highway on Tuesday ended with a body recovered from the Merrimack River in Salisbury.

State Police were assisting the U.S. Coast Guard and local police departments in the land and water search for the 70-year-old woman whose car was found abandoned on Route 95 south just south of the Whittier Bridge in Newburyport late in the morning.

State Police said an Air Wing unit, K9 unit and patrols were assisting, along with marine assets, in the search.

State Police said personal items in the vehicle allowed them to identify the woman — whose name was not released to the public as of Wednesday morning.

A canoeist in the river found a body in the river at about 3:15 p.m. on Thursday and the Coast Guard was able to recover the woman. State Police said an investigation determined the person recovered was the missing Beverly woman.

State Police said the investigation into the cause of the woman's death was ongoing as of Tuesday night.
