School Committee Chooses New Beverly Superintendent

Assistant Superintendent Suzanne Charochak will replace Dr. Steven Hiersche, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

BEVERLY, MA -- Beverly Assistant Superintendent Suzanne Charochak will become the district's next superintendent following a 4-3 vote by the school committee Wednesday. Charochak will replace Dr. Steven Hiersche, who is retiring at the end of the school year. Charochak was chosen over two other finalists for the position, Salem Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Mary Kate Carbone and Newmarket, NH Superintendent Meredith Nadeau.

According to the Salem News, which first reported this story, members who voted against Charochak signaled they wanted to fill the position with someone who could bring an outside perspective. When Mayor Mike Cahill, who also sits on the school committee, asked for a revote to make the decisions unanimous, members Lorinda Visnick and Rachael Abell voted no a second time, while John Mullady abstained.
