State Approves Funding for Middle School Project

Next step is for the MSBA and city to agree on exact reimbursement level.

Late last month, the Massachusetts School Building Authority unanimously voted to help fund the new Beverly Middle School project.

It is expected that the state will fund about $60 million of the proposed $109.211 million of the project.

Earlier in September, the City Council unanimously approved the funding for the project.

“I want to thank the City Council, School Committee, Superintendent
Hiersche, Finance Director Bryant Ayles, Commissioner of Public Works and Engineering Mike Collins, the Building Committee and the rest of the team that worked tirelessly to make this possible. Now, we’re onto final design and construction,” said Mayor Mike Cahill after signing the order to appropriate the $109.2 million for the project.

The new school is expected to be completed and open for students in the fall of 2018.

The proposed building project calls for the construction of a new four-story, 231,509-square-foot building located on the site of the existing Memorial School Building at 502 Cabot Street. The school would serve 1,395 students in grades five through eight.

The current building would be vacated and demolished in an early phase of the project, allowing for the construction of the new building to get underway on the site.
