Montserrat College of Art’s Summer 2015 Immersive Program is hosting a workshop on Fabricated Steel Sculpture. This course is designed to teach students the basic skills for working in metals as well as other related material. What you will learn will depend on your observations given, followed by hands-on experience and skills best acquired through direct interaction with your classmates and the instructor. Students will be encouraged to bring in steel objects to use as materials for their individual projects. Students will learn technical and practical methods used to manipulate metals into objects of their own design.

The course begins with the basic process of designing and modeling of your to be fabricated sculpture. Methods of Mig welding, plasma cutting along with tools used to form steel will be learned. The course is beneficial to those wishing to acquire skills in this area for the first time and to those already familiar with the basics. Students will then begin the process of designing and fabricating steel sculpture on a large scale. In addition to the processes covered in the first four weeks of class, students will learn how to use the TIG welder in the second half of class. The course is beneficial to those wishing to acquire skills in this area for the first time and to those already familiar with working in a larger scale environment. Students should have a freestanding fabricated sculpture by the end of the course.
