Beverly Firefighters Honored by American Red Cross
The Boston Marathon responders were honored at the Northeast Massachusetts' chapter's annual Heroes Breakfast.
The American Red Cross of Massachusetts Northeast Chapter celebrated heroes who embody the spirit of the American Red Cross Thursday, and no heroes match that description better than the eight Boston Marathon responders from the Beverly Fire Department.
Deputy Peter O’Connor; Lieutenant Eric Fowler; Lieutenant Ryan W. Laracy; Lieutenant Mathew J. Kowalski; Lieutenant Donald B. Philpot; Firefighter Michael D. Halloran; Firefighter Jonathan M. Palm and Firefighter Scott A. Perkins were volunteering at various security posts in the vicinity of the Marathon Finish Line.
Upon detonation of the first bomb, they rushed into the crowd along Boylston Street where hundreds lay injured and administered immediate first aid. These men relied on their training, experience, and courage to assist the injured and prevent further harm.

Measuring their own personal safety and the needs of the victims in the blast area, they didn’t think twice to rush in and provide aid. They continued to provide aid until all the victims were safely removed from the scene.
The Beverly 8 were among numerous heroes honored by the Red Cross, including Commander Douglas Peterson, a Beverly High School graduate who has served his country for 15 years, most notably as a combat surgeon serving in Afghanistan, Indonesia and during Operation Enduring Freedom.
