The North Shore TMA participates in the 20th Annual MassCommute Bicycle Challenge

SALEM, Mass., May 29, 2014 – The North Shore Transportation Management Association (NSTMA) participated in the 20th Annual MassCommute Bicycle Challenge (MCBC) from May 10-18 as part of the national and statewide Bike to Work Week promotions. During the 9-day Challenge, 55 employees from NSTMA member companies road close to 3100 miles and logged bicycle trips equating to $470 saved in gas and 2,568 pounds of CO2 prevented from entering the atmosphere.

The Bicycle Challenge itself set participation records worth noting.

A total of 3800 people registered for the Challenge (up from 2800 in 2013) and participants logged a total of 138,340 miles biked during the Challenge.

Last night, the MCBC hosted its annual Bike Bash, an awards ceremony at Flat Top Johnny’s in Cambridge, MA. The Bash celebrated leading participants in the categories of total mileage and longest average commute for business and school teams in the Boston metro area as well as total mileage for community teams in the area. NSTMA member Cell Signaling Technologies earned a top nod in the Total Mileage category, with 1,930 miles logged by the company’s employees.

More than 190 people attended last night’s Bike Bash, which boasted 47 raffle prizes and awards valued at over $4000 – including a grand prize raffle of a bike donated by Cambridge Bicycle. Major sponsors of the Bike Bash included Harvard Commuter Choice, MIT Commuter Connections, Flat Top Johnny’s, Harpoon Brewery and Urban Adventours.

Sponsors of the MassCommute Bicycle Challenge included NSTMA member Eastern Bank of Lynn as well as State Street, Hobbs Brook Management and the American Diabetes Association to name a few. The NSTMA also partnered with the North Shore Tour de Cure charity team during the Challenge.
