Week-long Backyard Growers Summer Session at Glen Urquhart School

Local gardeners age 8 to 11 can "Dig In" for a half-day program that begins Monday, June 25 in Beverly Farms

Backyard Growers, the grassroots organization from Gloucester, will spend next week growing, harvesting, and cooking food right in the gardens at Glen Urquhart School in Beverly Farms! Every day, facilitators and campers will explore a different part of growing food from the soil and everything living in it to seeds, pollinators, and what plants need to grow. Students will make delicious healthy snacks all while learning how to grow food and how the food system works in Cape Ann and beyond! Here's a preview:

1. Kids will bring the book "Pancakes, Pancakes" by Eric Carle to life by grinding their own flour, collecting eggs, and making their own butter to make a delicious pancake treat!
2. Activities like a scavenger hunt and relay race will reveal the five things that plants need to grow. We also turn into plants ourselves by dressing up and singing!
3. Kids will get a taste of what life is like under our feet with a day of wiggly worm fun! We'll work with and observe real live worms to create our own worm habitat.
4. We'll discover the world of seeds by learning what's inside them, how they grow, how to save seeds for the garden and taste some delicious seeds (...like popcorn).
5. Kids will learn that vegetables are for more then just eating when we make our own paints using beets and turmeric.

Camp will run Monday through Friday, June 25 to 29, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Afternoon "Camp Stay" options are available!
