I have been involved in the animal care profession for over 10 years, I have been a dog mom for 6 years, I have had pets as family members for as far back as I can remember and with each of these experiences I learn more and more about companion animal care. I think I have learned so much that I can fill a blog with all of this information. So here is my attempt at a pet care blog beginning with a series of "What I didn't know."
I am very embarrassed to admit that it took a long time for me to figure out that I couldn't share all of my meals and snacks with my German Shepherd, Henry. Not only is my diet not the most healthy for him, which I will probably cover why in another post, but some of the food I eat can be toxic and harmful to him! Luckily, Henry never got ill or was adversely affected.
For many years as a child I blindly fed my pets canned or bagged pet food and treats. Then while working at a kennel we fed our guests the same all natural kibble and dog treats unless a special diet was supplied by their people, without a thought about why they were fed this way. When I brought my first puppy home as an adult it never occurred to me to consider his diet. I fed him the most expensive bag of kibble I found at the grocery store and when he looked at me with his big brown eyes, I shared whatever I was eating.

I am telling you this story because I don't think I was alone with this way of thinking and feeding my pup and maybe this is the first time someone reading this post is hearing about Toxic Foods. To that person: Welcome to the "I Know Better Now" Club!
