YouthBuild North Shore, a program of North Shore CDC, received $1,100,000.00 grant on
September 22nd from the Department of Labor to fund their program for the next three
years. YouthBuild is a national organization that provides learning opportunities to
low-income young adults, ages 16 to 24, working toward their GEDs or high school
equivalency diplomas, while also learning job skills by building affordable housing in their
communities.
"I am so proud of the YouthBuild North Shore CDC team and their dedication to our
program. I look forward to expanding the impact of our program and helping more young
people on the North Shore, just like in many other communities that unfortunately did not
receive funding this is very much needed for the communities we serve. ," said Felicia
Pierce, Director of YouthBuild North Shore CDC.
The US Department of Labor funded 77 YouthBuild programs this year ranging from
$700,000 to $1.1 million to “help approximately 5,000 at-risk youth,” according to their
most recent press release.
“YouthBuild provides young people with an important opportunity to gain the education
and skills they need for good-paying jobs, while also helping them become more engaged
members of their communities. That can mean everything to a young person who didn’t get
the easiest start in life,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez.
The national YouthBuild USA model emphasizes leadership development, education,
counseling, community service projects with tangible impacts, and future pursuits in
college, careers, or both. This model is comprised of 50% Education, 40 % Construction,
and 10% Community Service. As part of service learning, students are AmeriCorps
Members. After completed their community service hours, students will receive a $1,500
education award that goes toward their post-secondary education.
"So much work has gone into making the program a real success, and I'm so happy it was
recognized with a federal grant to expand it further," said Mickey Northuctt, CEO of North
Shore CDC.
