17-Year-Old Facing Gun Charges After Boston Traffic Stop

BOSTON, MA — A Quincy teenager is facing multiple firearm charges after Boston Police recovered a loaded handgun early Friday morning during a traffic stop in Dorchester.

The 17-year-old was arrested at approximately 3:10 a.m. near Harvard Street and Johnston Road after officers saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed near Blue Hill Avenue and Abbot Street. Officers initiated a traffic stop and spoke with the driver.

As additional officers arrived, police reportedly saw the 17-year-old, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, breathing heavily, avoiding eye contact, and speaking in a barely audible tone. Officers ordered the occupants out of the vehicle and allegedly recovered a firearm from the teen's waistband.

The teen was taken into custody, while the remaining occupants were identified and released from the scene. Police said the firearm was determined to be a Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

The teen is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on delinquency charges of carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a large-capacity feeding device, and possession of ammunition without an FID card.

The driver was also issued a Massachusetts uniform citation for violating auto laws, according to police.
