192-Year-Old Faneuil Hall Restaurant To Close: Reports

BOSTON, MA —Durgin-Park restaurant, a Faneuil Hall staple since 1827, will be closing on Jan 12. Restaurant employees were told yesterday, according to NBCBoston10.

The CEO of Ark Restaurants told WBZ the restaurant at 30 N. Market Street was just not profitable anymore. Patch has reached out to Ark Restaurants for comment.

All appears normal on the restaurant's Facebook page, where the latest post is one imploring folks to join Open Mic every Thursday at 8pm in The HideOut bar.

The James Beard Award-winning restaurant has changed hands four times in the 192 years it's been around.

In 1827 John Durgin, Eldridge Park, and John G. Chandler purchased the dining hall that was built into Faneuil Hall Marketplace and turned it into a restaurant. In 1877 to honor his late business partners, Chandler named the restaurant Durgin-Park. The restaurant stayed in the Chandler family until 1945, when James Hallet bought it. Some 48 years later the Hallet family sell to the Kelly family who owned it until 2007 when Ark Restaurant Group purchased Durgin-Park.

The old-school restaurant is known for its oysters, chowder, prime rib, and baked beans.
