BOSTON, MA — A second juvenile has been arrested in connection with the armed robbery of two children operating a lemonade stand in South Boston last month, according to the Boston Police Department.
The 14-year-old turned himself in to officers and detectives Friday morning while accompanied by his mother. He has been charged with two counts of delinquency to wit: armed robbery and one count of delinquency to wit: carrying a firearm without a license. Police said the first suspect in the case, who is also 14 years old, was arrested on June 12.
The charges stem from the June 10 robbery on West Ninth Street. Two children had been operating a neighborhood lemonade stand when two suspects made several passes by the stand before approaching and asking whether Apple Pay would be accepted as payment.
Before the children could respond, the suspects grabbed a cash box containing cash. Police said one of the suspects then displayed a black firearm in his waistband before both fled the area on foot.
The victims, siblings Juliette and David Byrne, had set up the lemonade stand to earn spending money during the summer. Police later recovered the cash box, though the money had been removed.
The robbery drew widespread attention across the city and prompted an outpouring of community support. In the days following the incident, neighbors and residents stopped by the stand to support the children's business. Mayor Michelle Wu and City Councilor Ed Flynn also visited the stand, and the Byrne family later announced plans to donate a portion of the proceeds to a local gun violence prevention organization.
With Friday's arrest, both teenagers accused in the robbery are now in police custody.
