BOSTON, MA — A Dorchester man has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that police say involved a driver intentionally striking a scooter rider.
Jhonny Ruiz Soto, 21, was arrested on charges of second-degree murder and leaving the scene of personal injury or death, according to the Boston Police Department. He is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
Boston Police said officers assigned to District B-2 responded at approximately 2:28 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, to a report of a pedestrian struck near Blue Hill Avenue and Castlegate Road. When officers arrived, they found the victim lying in the middle of the intersection. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Investigators said the suspect vehicle intentionally sped up and hit the victim, who had been operating a scooter, before fleeing toward Seaver Street. Police later located Soto and the vehicle near Blue Hill Avenue and American Legion Highway and took him into custody.
Police said the victim's scooter was taken from the scene by an unknown man and has not been recovered.
The Boston Police Department's Homicide Unit is continuing to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at 617-343-4470. Anonymous tips may be submitted by calling 1-800-494-TIPS or texting "TIP" to CRIME.
