BOSTON, MA — A Montana man has been arrested on charges of threatening to kill a Massachusetts resident, according to the United States Attorney's Office District of Massachusetts.
Matthew Shelley, 37, of Missoula, Montana, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston on Thursday, July 23 on one count of transmitting a threatening communication in interstate commerce. Shelley was arrested at his Montana home on July 30 and is scheduled to make an initial appearance and detention hearing in the District of Montana on Monday, Aug. 3. He will appear in federal court in Boston at a later date.
According to court documents, Shelley allegedly used the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to threaten a Massachusetts resident on Oct. 18, 2025 and used a racial slur.
The charge of transmitting a threatening communication in interstate commerce carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison followed by up to three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Pohl of the U.S. Attorney's Office National Security Unit following an investigation by the FBI Boston Field Division.
