📰 News we're reading

• Boston councilors say tax assessments pinch the working-class, but cut the wealthy a break (bostonherald.com) — Boston city councilors are pressing the assessing department on why luxury homes in Back Bay and Beacon Hill appear significantly underassessed while modest properties in neighborhoods like Roslindale, Roxbury, and Dorchester are often taxed near or above sale prices. With average single-family tax bills up 13% this year, critics argue the current system shifts the burden onto working- and middle-class homeowners and costs the city millions in revenue.

• Police Blotter: Violent rumpus goes down at Boston City Hall (bostonherald.com) — A tense confrontation at Boston City Hall led to an assault-and-battery report after a staffer's daughter was denied entry near closing time, though no injuries were reported. The same police blotter details used cooking oil thefts in Beverly, a fatal police shooting investigation in Stoughton, and several Boston-area arrests, including charges in South Boston, Roslindale, West Roxbury, Dorchester, and more.

• MSPCA takes in 30+ dogs from Alabama ahead of Hurricane Isaias (wpri.com) — More than two dozen dogs from Alabama have arrived in Boston with the MSPCA, freeing up Gulf Coast shelter space ahead of Hurricane Isaias and giving these animals a fresh start in Massachusetts. After a short quarantine and any needed care, the dogs will be available for adoption, and locals can also support the MSPCA's Natural Disaster Relief program with online donations.
