Beef from Mass. Slaughterhouse Linked to E.Coli Recalled
Health officials have issued a recall for certain beef, veal and bison products that came from animals at Adams Slaughterhouse in Athol.

Adams Farms Slaughterhouse, based in Athol, has issued a recall for beef, veal and Bison products that may be contaminated with E.Coli and are sold in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Eastern New York, according to an announcement from the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
According to the recall announcement posted Sept. 24, the raw intact and non-intact beef products originated from animals slaughtered on July 15, 25, and 27, 2016 as well as August 3, 8, 10, 11, 17, 24 and 26, 2016, and were further processed and packed on various dates between July 21, and September 22, 2016.
The items were shipped to farmer’s markets, retail locations and restaurants in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and eastern New York. FSIS said the products may have been shipped to neighboring states in the immediate area.

On Sept. 16, FSIS was informed of an investigation of E.Coli illnesses. Working with health departments in Connecticut and Massachusetts and the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, the agency determined there was a link between the slaughterhouse and the illnesses.
Based on the epidemiological investigation, seven case-patients have been identified in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia with illness onset dates ranging from June 27, 2016 to September 4, 2016. Traceback information was available for five of the patients and it indicated that all five had consumed beef products supplied by the slaughterhouse.

"FSIS and the company are concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers," the USDA announcement said. "Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase."
The recall has been classified as a Class I recall. A Class I recall is defined by the USDA as, "a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."
