BOSTON, MA — The Boston Transportation Department this week got work on a new bike route along a main downtown artery, changing the street layout for almost all users.

The new separated bike route will span Court Street to the Longfellow Bridge, and is a piece of the Connect Downtown plan launched in 2019. That plan includes pedestrian and bike upgrades around popular downtown spots like the Boston Common, Public Gardens and down Commonwealth Avenue.

Starting Monday, city crews began removing pavement markings along the westbound side of Cambridge Street, and will later install flexible bollard and reprogram traffic signals.

"Cambridge Street is in the top 3 percent of streets citywide for injury-causing crashes involving people riding bikes. We need to provide safe, everyday accommodation for people on bikes," the Boston Transportation Department said of the project.
