Boston Manhole Fire Prompts Outage

More than 250 people lost power after a manhole caught fire in Hyde Park Tuesday..

BOSTON — This morning a manhole exploded on River Street in Hyde Park, prompting road closures and power outages, as firefighters worked to put out the fire. There were no injuries reported. But expect delays as crews work to fix the issue.

Someone called to report a fire coming from a manhole just after 9 a.m. simultaneously there were reports of a power outtage in the are of River Street. When officials got to 837 River St. they saw flames coming from the manhole, according to the fire department.

Officials said they were able to quickly put out the fire and call Eversource to the scene.

As of noon there were 379 customers without power in Boston, according to Massachusetts Emergency Management. According to Eversource, some 250 of them were related. The company estimated by 3:15 p.m. power would be restored to the area.

It's unclear what caused the fire. Eversource lists the reason for the outage as equipment damage.
