Brigham and Women's Offers 1,600 Buyouts

One of the top hospitals in the country will consider layoffs if a target number isn't reached.

BOSTON - Brigham and Women's Hospital is offering buyouts to 1,600 workers as one of the hospitals often regarded among the best in the world looks to control costs, The Boston Globe reported.

A challenging time in health care is burdening even Brigham, which told the Globe it remains profitable. Paying off two major recent projects, a $510 million new building and a $335 new software system, has added to the struggles.

Shortly after news of the buyouts broke Thursday morning, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced the hospital and Partners HealthCare agreed to pay $10 million to resolve fraud allegations.

The hospital said layoffs are likely to follow if a buyout target is not hit. Not all of the 18,000 employees at Brigham are being offered the buyout.

Brigham was ranked as the second-best hospital in the state in the most recent U.S. News and World rankings. It was behind only Mass. General, which along with Brigham is a founding member of Partners.
