They say a man’s “soul” is his spiritual essence. Life’s twists and turns can lift that soul high into the sky or send it crashing to the ground below. Unfortunately, 2023 started with the latter for Will Downing, following the unexpected and soul-crushing loss of daughter Aron Siobhan Downing in January. As a father, he was devastated…heartbroken. As an artist, he sought solace and comfort through his craft…facing the hurt head-on and exploring multiple themes of love to begin the healing. Persevering through the pain Downing is poised to finish the year with his soul rising…literally! The Prince of Sophisticated Soul is ready to share his 7- song masterclass in triumph over tragedy, Soul Rising!
Celebrating an insane 35 years in the “bizness” and 27 Albums to his credit Will Downing will not be stopped! Flexing on his international appeal, the lead single "What Part of My Love" shot to the top of the UK Soul Chart Top 30 and parked there. Those who no longer listen to new releases as the collective work it was intended to be, should make an exception in this case. Although not a "concept" album, the pieces of Soul Rising fit together beautifully as a single statement and should be enjoyed as such. We all know the about the smoothness, but there's a brand-new kind of...dare I say..."Funkiness", that I think is here to stay!
You (and your speakers, Headphones) etc….. will feel the difference right off the jump, with the lead-off cut, “Closer to Me”, when that bass and drum starts hitting a little differently. The familiar writing and production tandem of Downing and guitarist Randy Bowland, turn the heat up a bit from their usual formula. With keyboardist Mike Logan Sr. and background vocalist Ms. Monet rounding out the groove, I dare you not to move somethin'!
House of Love, another Downing/Bowland collab, gives me "Maze" vibes, however unintended, but that's never a bad thing! To the extent over the last 4 decades, these two surviving entities may have directly or indirectly influenced each other, I'll welcome that musical baby into the fold every time with open arms and ears.
Make no mistake...Will Downing didn't forget the "smooth" that made the Man the Myth the Legend! Nor did he abandon his world-famous knack for what he affectionately calls "interpretations" of classic hits. He plucked an absolute diamond of a gem from arguably one of the finest early 70's albums, The Stylistics, Round Two, and their hauntingly enchanting, “You're As Right As Rain”! If you've ever "slow-dragged" with a blue light in the basement, you will be transported to afros, platforms, bell-bottoms and Brut cologne...if you know you know, but I digress. In addition to assists from long-time collaborator Ronnie Foster, Downing recruits the sweet trumpet of solo Artist and one half of 90's duo Imprompt2, Johnny Britt to seal vibe.
Soul Rising then takes a solemn turn to the heart and very "Soul" of this release. Downing, maybe for his own well-being, had to stare his tragedy down squarely and turn art into therapy. “Till We Meet Again”, serves as a father's sweet hand-off to God to care for his angel Siobhan, until they're joined again divinely as father and daughter in heavenly reward. An unimaginable undertaking for a parent attempting to channel pain into art. The song is introduced by the actual last New Year's Day last voicemail exchanged by Downing and Siobhan, which contain no hint of the drama to unfold just 10 days later. Downing makes the song a true family affair, with daughter Aja and wife Audrey Wheeler Downing lending their supportive voices. A passionately moving albeit gut-wrenching tribute, but well done.
Given that dynamic, it's understandable that the final three tracks all lean into a theme of "Love". Starting with the aforementioned smash, “What Part of My Love”, but pivoting back to that new "funk" vibe with “Love You Right”, this time with Hubert Eaves IV joining the revival. An intentional sequence I would think, to lift and restore the spirit of Soul Rising!
I think the final cut, “Love of A Lifetime”, as a message, speaks simultaneously of what we seek in both a personal relationship and the love of a father to a child. Maybe that wasn't the intent, but given the circumstances, I heard both. Love is love!

The team behind the successful Best Flippin' Card Show here in our home town with 80+ events under our management in the Massachusetts area, is heading downtown for the very first time and coming to Hynes Convention Center Hall A on Saturday, May 2nd and Sunday May 3rd. You'll find us inside the 32,000 sq ft convention center and foyer area leading into Hall A. Back Bay is the gem of the city, surrounded by incredible restaurants, hotels, and historic sites. Inside you'll find all kinds of TCG vendors covering around 300 tables so give yourself plenty of time on the day, or even two!

Note that 9 AM - 10 AM on both days is for our VIP Flippin' Fans program, general public tickets provide entry from 10:01 - 5:00 (closure is 4 PM on Sunday). You can purchase all types of tickets to "skip the line" here through OnTreasure! We will also accept cash/credit at the door for general admission.&nbsp;General admission single tickets are $25 on Saturday and $20 on Sunday for all those 13 years of age and up, with entry beginning at 10 AM. For those that don't know, Best Flippin' ALWAYS eats processing fees for tickets, meaning what you see as the charge is what you will pay.&nbsp;Kids are always free at Flippin' events but we ask they have a chaperone via a paying adult.
VIP packages are $150 for those entering at 9 AM and are filled with a ton of value! Kids accompanying other VIP's can get in to the event for free that are under 13, however, no children may attend the early hour alone. Not only will you get exclusive access to vendor inventory before the general public, each specially designed VIP package will include things such as random booster packs from Paldea Evolved down to Phantasmal Flames, a specialty VIP badge, an exclusive event pin, front line access to TCG actors, show schwag, sponsor provided items, and other specialty prizes not even announced yet. Most VIP bags will hold Pokemon singles with a ceiling of up to $400! VIP packages will be limited to 200 in total and are only made available here through OnTreasure, unless some remain unsold the morning of the event.
Every entry, whether they are VIP or general admission, is always eligible for our excellent door prizes and you will not need to be present to win. Simply fill out your prize ticket as you come into the venue so you can be entered into our drawings that will take place around 3:30 Sunday. We will be featuring items worth more than $2000 in total up for grabs. Those prizes will include single graded cards, booster boxes, hand made rugs, and a Nintendo Switch 2!
The Best Flippin' TCG Show features some of the best vendors from all over the country, focusing on items for collectors at any budget level, from cards to plushies and original artwork. This event will have lots of free kid activities such as character meet and greets and a kid zone with lawn and video games set up, a Pokemon balloon artist <a href="https://jonahstwisters.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jonah's Twisters</a>, and Pokemon stencil tattoos from <a target="_blank" href="https://partyfestini.com/" rel="nofollow noopener">Festini</a>. A $70 cash Pokemon tournament will be run by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/professorthomasf/" rel="nofollow noopener">Professor Thomas </a>over two days. This not only gets you entered into the tournament but also gets you early access at 9 AM to the vendor floor both days (sans the VIP swag bag). Food will be on hand on the show floor to feed hungry show goers.
Trade night will be hosted on site where the Pokemon tournament takes place in our foyer. Celebrating over 90 years of excellence in fashion education, The School of Fashion Design is the only educational institution in New England dedicated exclusively to the study of fashion design. SFD provides students with a solid foundation in apparel design and construction, and the skills required for a successful career in fashion. Our technical Certificate program is taught by experts in the field of fashion design. Students may take courses toward the Certificate or on a class-by-class basis to fill professional education interests. For creatives and textile arts enthusiasts, SFD offers workshops in various fiber arts such as weaving, lace making, embroidery, millinery, upcycling, and more. As an SFD student, you will join a diverse community of emerging designers. Our studios are filled with recent high school graduates, students from nearby colleges enriching their education with fashion, and working professionals embarking on a new career path. SFD faculty and students are active partners in our local community, collaborating regularly with organizations and businesses through internships, exhibitions, field trips, and special events. Our reputation for excellence is on display each time our students show their work at fashion shows and exhibits throughout the year. With an SFD Certificate in Fashion Design, our alumni have enjoyed fashion careers with Adidas, Coldwater Creek, J. Jill, New Balance, PUMA, Ralph Lauren, Talbots, Timberland, TJX Companies, and more.
