Chinese Infiltrating MBTA Via New Trains? State Rep Is Wary

A Republican lawmaker plans on introducing legislation that would keep a Chinese-owned firm from working on new MBTA trains.

A state lawmaker is warning that the Chinese could be using the MBTA as their own personal Trojan Horse.

State Rep. Shawn Dooley, a Norfolk Republican, plans on introducing legislation next month that would cut off future contracts with the Chinese-owned firm that is building 400 new Orange and Red Line cars. His reason? Dooley said the Chinese may eventually launch cyberattacks on our transportation network.

Dooley initially raised the concerns in an op-ed for CommonWealth magazine.

"The sophistication of the Chinese effort is no better illustrated [than] by the insidiousness of how it has lured the T as an ally," Dooley said in a press release. "It’s a ruse and nothing more than what a powerful and well-funded espionage actor does."

The MBTA told CommonWealth Magazine none of the software in the new vehicles are made in China and inspections pass standards set by the Department of Defense.
