Dorchester Historical Society Apologizes For Holiday Card Mistake

A holiday open house invite with the words 'dreaming of a white Dorchester' was a an 'unfortunate oversight,' the group said.

BOSTON — The Dorchester Historical Society has apologized after sending out a holiday card that reads, “We’re dreaming of a white Dorchester.”

The society took to social media to say the intent was to riff on the words of the classic Bing Crosby Christmas song, but that it wasn't fully thought through.

"We are truly horrified as we never want to project that message. Thank you for your understanding!" the society tweeted.

The society sent out the postcard last week advertising its annual holiday open house. After folks started tweeting about the double meaning, the society said it was horrified at the unintended implication.

"We are very truly sorry about our graphic used for this event. This was an unfortunate oversight on our part and the event photograph has been removed from our social media. We were simply changing the words to the classic Christmas carol and did not think it through properly," the group tweeted.

The historical society removed the postcard from social media sites and replaced it with one saying, " May your Dorchester days be merry and bright."
