BOSTON, MA — Former Salem State basketball player Kim Driscoll and former Harvard women's basketball captain Maura Healey will host a party at the TD Garden on Jan. 5 — not to play, but to celebrate becoming lieutenant governor and governor, respectively.

The incoming gubernatorial team Wednesday announced plans for an inauguration celebration following their swearing-in ceremony on Jan. 5. The party on the Celtics (and Bruins) home court will have a basketball theme: "Moving the ball forward," according to the inauguration committee.

“This inauguration will be a celebration of teamwork, positivity and breaking barriers — and there’s no better place to hold the event than at TD Garden,” Healey, who is serving as attorney general, said in a news release. “It’s about looking forward to the future and engaging directly with people about how we can deliver for them across this Commonwealth.”

Although details are scarce, the event at TD Garden will be open to anyone who wants to buy tickets.

The Healey-Driscoll administration will mark several firsts in Massachusetts, outside their basketball skills: they are the first pair of women elected to lead a state executive branch in U.S. history; and Healey is the first gay person to serve as Massachusetts governor.

Healey and Driscoll, who is serving as Salem's mayor, defeated Republican candidate Geoff Diehl and Leah Allen in the November election.
